You have appeared in another world. It is the late 1980s. In this world, there exist people and creatures capable of using supernatural powers. The town you have appeared in, Misaki, belongs to a family of magi, who are using the magical energy of the town's leyline to further their research. Misaki is about to become the centre of a conflict between the two heirs of the Aozaki. The elder sister, Touko, was passed over in favour of her younger sister, Aoko, who is more suited to learning the magic that their grandfather has discovered. You will be given a history, abilities, and equipment. You get the one time opportunity to change your appearance however you desire, so long as it fits your chosen Identity.
A form of life energy that comes in a few variants. The most common in the current day is Ether. Magi distinguish between the World's magical energy and a person's own magical energy, with the former being Mana (large source) and the latter being Od (small source). Magical energy from the Age of Gods is called True Ether. It is significantly more potent, and destroys any Ether it comes into contact with. There is very little True Ether remaining in the modern day, and most of it is in the hands of a select few lucky magi.
The usage of magical energy to actualize supernatural phenomena, called Mystics (also translated as "mystery"). Mystics degrade in quality as more people become aware of how to use them, but also grow in power with age. Distinct from True Magic (also translated as "Sorcery") in that "magic" is truly impossible, while magecraft is simply taking a shortcut to achieve what is already possible for humans. A long time ago, during the Age of Gods, magecraft was able to reach into the realm of True Magic.
Users of magecraft who seek the Swirl of the Root (more properly called 「 」), a pursuit that is near-impossible. Magi are tasked with researching their family's magecraft then contributing to the family's Magic Crest in order to pass it down to the next generation, so that eventually the family might achieve this impossible goal. Those who do not pursue 「 」 and instead use magecraft for more mundane reasons are called "spellcasters".
A set of ranks represented by letters which measure something's potency. In order of ascending power, they are E, D, C, B, and A. These ranks can have + or - modifiers attached to them, which represent that the rank can change under certain conditions. Additionally, there exists an extra rank: EX, which represents something which falls outside of the normal scale, usually but not always by being far above it. Typically applied to supernatural phenomena, but theoretically there's nothing stopping you from measuring mundane things with these (for example, one could say an excellent chef has "A Rank cooking skill").
